Auditions

Auditions are open to actors who are registered for the summer camp, and will occur on the first day of camp. ECT encourages every student to participate in auditions! It is a great way to learn about the process of creating a main-stage musical, but also invites students to learn about themselves as actors and gain confidence when performing in front of an audience. Every student is a member of the ECT family. 
What will I need prepared for auditions?
​Unlike past years, students will not be required to prepare anything for auditions! The first day will consist of a series of workshops that will prepare the students for when it comes time to audition for the directors.

Audition Process

​Each actor will be asked to read one of the monologues in the attached document for their audition. Don't worry, it doesn't have to be memorized!
Each actor will be asked to sing a short section of "Oh The Thinks You Can Think" from Seussical Jr. Don't worry, it doesn't have to be memorized and everyone will have plenty of time to learn it on the first day!
​In order to keep the audition process calm, casual, and stress-free, all auditions are closed. This means that only the directors are in the room as the students audition. ECT is a very supportive family and although other actors will not be in the room when the actual auditions occur, we encourage everyone to congratulate each other after their audition.

Casting
When all auditions are complete, the directors begin the very difficult job of casting the show. Every actor who auditions will get a part! The cast list will be posted that night on our website and we will hold our first official rehearsal on the next day.

Seussical Jr. ​character breakdown

The Cat in the Hat
The Cat in the Hat is the essence of mischief, fun, and imagination. The Cat stirs things up, causes trouble, but always sets things right again, helping Jojo to discover the power of his/her own imagination as they create the story for the show together. The Cat can be played by a male or female actor who has great physicality and improvisation skills.

Jojo
Jojo is a "thinker", a smart child with a wild imagination.  He/she can be played as being a little bit awkward, a little bit of a loner, or simply a rambunctious kid whose Thinks get him/her into constant trouble. Jojo can be played by a male or female actor who has strong singing chops and can embody an imaginative child. 

Horton the Elephant
Horton is a big-hearted guy who is steadfast, responsible and always tries to do the right thing for his friends. He is imaginative and receptive to the world around him, but he is also very self-conscious.  Horton's view of the world never changes - he believes in its goodness. The actor playing Horton must have great acting/singing skills. 

Gertrude Mcfuzz
Gertrude Mcfuzz is a very self-conscious bird and aware that her one-feather tail isn't perfect. She goes through a major transition throughout the course of the show. Gertrude starts out as a very shy bird and then evolves into a confident peacock. In other words, she stops caring about her looks, and grows up. 

Mayzie La Bird
Mayzie La Bird is self-centered, selfish, and vain. Mayzie will never admit to her own flaws and she manipulates anyone she can into doing what she wants. The actor playing Mayzie must be able to command the stage. After all, she believes she is the STAR! The actor playing Mayzie must be able to sing, dance, and act. She is a true triple threat!

Sour Kangaroo
Sour Kangaroo is a citizen of the Jungle of Nool. She isn't really sour at all, but just has a lot of attitude. She's loud, brassy and a lot of fun. Sour Kangaroo is the main antagonist and the cause of all Horton’s trouble. The actor playing her must be a strong singer/actor with good comic ability and soulful singing.  

Young Kangaroo
Young Kangaroo is also a citizen of the Jungle of Nool. She is the Sour Kangaroo’s daughter and does whatever her mother does. She’s very sassy with lots of attitude. The actor playing her must have great comedic timing. 

Mr. Mayor
The Mayor of Whoville and Jojo’s father. He and his wife try hard to raise a difficult child in a difficult world. They may get aggravated with Jojo, but they love him/her dearly and try to do the right thing, even if it turns out to be a mistake. The actor playing Mr. Mayor must be able to portray a father figure and have a strong voice. 

Mrs. Mayor
The Mayor’s wife and Jojo’s mother. Her and her husband try hard to raise a difficult child in a difficult world. They may get aggravated with Jojo, but they love him/her dearly and try to do the right thing, even if it turns out to be a mistake. The actor playing Mrs. Mayor must be able to portray a mother figure and have a strong voice. 

Wickersham Brothers
These are monkey brothers and citizens of the Jungle of Nool. They are not bad guys! They're simply a lot like kids who tease, play pranks and get a kick out of making mischief, although often at others' expense. They side with the Sour Kangaroo in her campaign against Horton and cause more trouble for him. The actors playing the Wickersham Brothers should be strong singers and confident movers. 

Bird Girls
These are some sassy birds and citizens of the Jungle of Nool. The popular girls in any school--a clique of pretty, self-centered "back up birds" who do whatever Mayzie does. They often act as storytellers, picking up where The Cat left off. The actors playing the Bird Girls must be strong singers, dancers, and have great stage presence. 

Yertle the Turtle
Yertle the Turtle is a citizen of the Jungle of Nool. He thinks he is more important than he really is. Presides as the Judge at Horton’s trial. The actor playing Yertle must have a strong sense of rhythm. 

Vlad Vladikoff
Vlad is a vicious vulture and does the Wickersham's dirty work. The actor playing Vlad must be able to command the stage. 

Citizens of Nool
Jungle animals and other characters that live in the Jungle of Nool. They all side with the Sour Kangaroo on her campaign against Horton. The citizens of Nool should be a diverse group of animals that are all good movers and strong singers. 

Citizens of Whoville
Citizens of Whoville on the Planet of Who. They are ordinary people, but they are so small as to be invisible. They live in fear that their planet is in trouble. The actors playing the citizens of Whoville must have a strong sense of rhythm and work well in a group. 

Ensemble
Ensemble roles include : Fish, circus animals, and other cameo roles.
